Bush Rangers
Bush Rangers WA is a community development program, supporting young Western Australians in taking an active role in the conservation of the natural environment, through a variety of practical nature conservation projects and recreational activities. Butler College’s Bush Ranger Cadet Unit is an out-of-school program run by staff members who volunteer their time to deliver this amazing program.
The program is endorsed by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Completion of Levels 1, 2 and 3 by cadets in Years 10, 11 and 12 may count towards meeting requirements of the WA Certificate of Education (WACE), as well as volunteer hours.
Who Can Join?
All Butler College students in Years 8 - 12 can apply. Students must have ‘good standing’ and seek a recommendation from a staff member to ensure they adhere to College values. If enrolments are high, applicants will be placed on a waiting list until a space becomes available. Unfortunately due to high numbers, we are unable to accept Year 7 students.
Annual Membership
Cadets have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and camps, at an annual charge of $120 ($30 per Term). The program is supported by Cadets WA, Department of Local Government and Communities, Department of Parks and Wildlife and other community organisations to subsidise the cost of activities throughout the year.
Activities
Cadets meet after school every Thursday during the school term until 4.35pm. Each term we provide an outline of activities, including whole-day excursions and overnight camps. Past activities have included:
- Rehabilitation of Kahana Park Bush Land
- Conservation of Quinn’s Beach
- Surfing lessons
- Tree planting
- First aid courses
- Mountain biking
- Bush walking and hiking
- Handling snakes, reptiles and birds of prey
- Experiencing Indigenous culture and bush tucker
- Teambuilding, leadership and social skills games
- Caving
- Abseiling and rock-climbing
- Swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving
